saturday at a strangers

somewhere birds call to each other,
the wind carries them away,

i watch the houses next to me
grow as the trees slowly pace back
and forth, waiting for their roots to take hold,

just outside the patio grass becomes
a place to hide, a sanctuary in tiny blades
too small to cut,

from where i stand the fridge
balks at why it must keep things cold,
but still, its relentless hum keeps
it calm,

perhaps through blinds the
window looks less like a window
and more like the world outside,

but the back door is open
& bees are free to come in,

there are pictures on the wall,
a reason to look outside
while remaining
boxed in & framed,

the particular patter of couches,
flowers & lines, a place to sit,
but still, inside,

the glass next to me tries to be lemonade,
but so much for that (as Kroetsch might

liquidate the masses, move the price,
a certain amount of appeal, the sticker of
a half price sale, move everything
outside, tables & a side of change,
waiting for the first customer, a
used bag of things to need, arrive

sunshine & coffee squeeze, grass
roots to the next yard, one shadow

haze, mowed lawn & walking tables,
tin box to pass on, what’s left,
the few things that remain

& the smell of wind,
dog in the morning,
pass by, collect
samples of, & birds,
it isn’t long, like
they say, leaves to
follow, branches of
solitude, play on grass,
a page a turn,
sleep & blue skies,
the bugs don’t care,
cough with the
stick, fold, stand
& walk towards, roll
with, but go

to be continued: XX – (bus

leaving pine centre,
a passenger in the
crowd, streets travel
through, torn knee,
the hold to skin,
once a walk, yellow
& watch your step,
press red to stop, smile,
traffic in an open window,
aquatic at the centre, soon
to get off soon, walk,
seats of a pattern,
inside the mold, tattoo
& sunglasses, weather
worn floors, step
outside, wind on
a sunny patch of grass
